What should you do if you get arrested?
 Email To Friend    Print Version

There are three very important steps that one should take if one gets arrested, comply, keep your cool, ask for a lawyer.1.  Comply with whatever the officer asks.  Running, fighting, or being non-compliant with a law enforcement officer never ends well for an arestee.  At the least, the officer will remember anyone who gave them trouble and will be more likely to ask for a harsh resolution.  A worse, at least temporarily, outcome is the dreaded "Tazer! Tazer! Tazer!" call followed by "riding the lightning".  Being Tazed is not a pleasant experience. This however does not mean that you have to give the officer permission to search.

2.  Do not, under any circumstances,  give the officer any "lip".  Again, it might cause the officer to remember and desire for a harsh outcome to be the end result.  No infraction will be resolved right there on the scene and no one wants a situation to escalate.

3.    Finally, and the most important, ask for, if necessary demand a lawyer.  More cases end in convictions due to an arrestee talking to the police before they talk to a lawyer, than any other way.  Speaking to a lawyer before speaking to the police is the best way to protect your freedom.
